  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Hello! Here are some of my latest (and best) creative works to date. I have a passion for character design, and color and light aren't my strong point. Most are original characters, but one is a fanart.I'm looking for advice on light, color, and shadow, as well as opinions on my character designs overall, despite lack of color/incomplete color.

Looking forward to hearing from you all, and perhaps making some friends!

Hi @MrPajamaPants , Thanks for posting in the critique forum.

Okay easy enough.

Okay. So first I need some more information, so you can help us help you. And while you do your homework I'll get started on your critique, and as I'm working on it I will update it according to your answers.

Can you link or share a style guide? Meaning, is there a specific art style that you want to emulate? A goal that we can help you achieve to show you what you need to learn? And I mean, what you want your drawing to look like when you are done. And I dont mean like a certain movie. That is too vague. Link a specific sheet of professional development art from arstation or equivalent. Something meant for visual development for character art, since that is what we are critiquing here. We need character art for green light pitch meetings.

In the meantime browse some of the art critiques on the forum, I try to be super informative so look for my little zombie head. And if you are going to write and direct you need to be able to do the same thing if people are drawing for you as a director.

(Edit: Reworded) Here's a few notes till I get the other info I need to help you with. I'm trying to be funny and not hurtful. These are gut reactions people in the industry might think but not say cause they might try to be nice.

.
(Edit: Added) Overall your characters look a little elongated, and their incompleteness make it look like you don’t know how to, or don’t want to draw feet. The clothing is either very skimpy or super sexy tight with no natural draping tendencies. The light color and shadow are not really able to critique until you show me a style guide to push where you want. Right now it’s just a little, “colored in”. Mainly I would push you to learn how to manipulate a simple mannequin to learn proportions manipulation. I would also push you to master perspective and foreshortening . Doing those is a real pain trust me. But it’s worth it in the end.

I recomend moderndayjames, and I cannot recomend enough https://cubebrush.co/foundationartgroup for fundamentals for someone who doesn't have time for school.

Once you upload your style guide sample/s I can help you with the light and color.
It will take me a day, maybe two to complete the lesson.

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

I'm greatly inspired by anime and manga from the 80's and 90's, and artists for some of the early Konami and Capcom games probably have the largest effect on my stylistic choices. They have that retro anime flair I'm going for, but they manage to transcend the limitations of the style and genre. Some of these artists include:

Kinu Nishimura,

Shinkiro:

and Bengus:

I also greatly adore Ken Sugimori, a predominant character artist on the Pokemon games.

A lot of other artists are on my radar as influences but I figured these were the most obvious based on my natural style. I'm completely self-taught, and truly only feel somewhat confident in the area of anatomy. Every other area of illustration, from light, color, shadow, value, etc, are all things I'm seeking to learn more about to become more well-rounded.

Okay, There are a lot of explanations here. I know this looks crazy and it's a lot but its all in one place and its well rounded and generalized to someone newer.

But it covers illustration, character figure invention, (light/shadow/value) <--same thing, you just do all this in notan stage. Design, and some other stuff you maybe didn't think of.

Keep posting in the blog forums. Your more heavy hitting touch stones definitely use reference and render lovingly for hours on what they do, and when they change styles for illustration or design just remember they have also mastered figure invention, character design and manipulation of proportions. How you render something is second banana to figure invention and drawing.

And for real, I cover a lot of these things more in depth in many of my critiques. How to pick color, how to think about color, how to think about composition, intent, lots. Time to read.

12/6/21 updated and reworded many sections

Oh. A lot of things I discovered on my own and from teachers was in this book. And his second one Framed Drawing Techniques. Get both. Must have to start the Library.

Well, thank you again! Your advice was really insightful, and I'll definitely be posting more on the forums.

I gave your notes a glance over, but I'll definitely need a while to comprehend and process it all. Again, thanks for the advice.

As a side note; I just had to address your question about my line quality. No, it's not a sketch, at least, not intentionally. Currently I'm running with a Surface Go tablet with Clip Studio, Photoshop, and Autodesk sketchbook installed. NO MATTER which program I use, or what brush I choose, none of my lines are clean, and the marks never exactly hit where I'm putting my pen...unless it's the "soft pencil" in clip studio, thus, why my lines look this way.

I've messed with stabilization, brush properties, I've tried resetting my computer, buying a different brand of pen, reinstalling the drivers, EVERYTHING. No matter what I do, every sharp, hard brush in each program is EXTREMELY pixelated, unwieldy, jitters WAY TOO MUCH, has way too much post-correction, and is just plain uncontrollable. The only way I've found to manage it is to crank the stabilization to a very high setting, but then I lose the ability to accurately draw curves and whatnot.

It's gotten to the point where I've recently opted to just work with pencil, pen, and watercolor, because what you see here is ALL after spending hours of redrawing THE SAME line over and over again, simply because my computer just wants to act like this.

Anyways, you've given me more than enough advice, but if you have any in that area it'd be much appreciated. Thanks for listening to my sob-story. Should be getting an Ipad soon and all the hardship will be over. :joy:

Hey @MrPajamaPants love the style you’re going for, I’m kind of trying to do a similar thing, something close to manga/comic book art, and I do agree mastering the basics of proporions anatomy etc are crucial regardless of the style
I had a similar issue with linework in digital art, nothing i did had clean lines and i knew i can do clean lines on paper … Unfortunately i am not sure if the solution i found would be very helpful - i migrated to an ipad, which felt much more natural to me than the wacom/cintiq i used before that. Could have been an issue with the computer as well, the one i was using was not the best and newest, i guess that affects the response time etc.
So if you have the opportunity to test out a different setup, you could find out if it’s you or the hardware, if you can do it on paper its probably not you though
@brohawx thanks again for the time you put into these critiques, I will definitely review as well and steal what i can, also looking for these books now, you’re awesome man

10 days later

Thanks! I'm really inspired by the pencil, ink and watercolor concept art from some older anime like Evangelion and stuff from that era, thus why my colors have a little bit of a washed-out effect.
