This is my work for the week! I worked just as hard even though I don't have quite as much content. Many hours were spent watching the head construction video lol. This was my first time drawing with values! I worked very hard on them. Criticism always welcome! I have not quite weened myself from using circles to help me draw the base yet, I will focus on that once I feel I have the construction down.
- Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?in24.1k
- Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with youin1.4k

- Thank you @daceronine! If I remember I save in google cloud, I will have to stick a note to do it more often. Lamp is from life. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!in47.8k
Your construction of head is good, I made some notes with red. Most of things I did are just changing values. With time you will see values better. Keep in mind I am not perfect either :D. I didn't do much on eyebrows and forehead because I can't see them and I am not that confident in anatomy. If you have question ask me.
Oh my gosh Nikolinkanikolova thank you so much!!! This is super helpful. I really appreciate that you took the time to help me with this. I will have to pay attention to the unseen ear and take that part of the forehead off. Thank you for pointing out the eyes, neck, chin, ear and lips and everything! This is very helpful to see how you handle these features! I am going to study this in great detail. Thank you so much!
Quick update, I decided to redo the VP's for my 3 point perspective drawing and put in the dragon / snake today! I have been hard at work attempting to get these darn contours down on warped cylinders and I think I am getting close. Please let me know if anyone spots any errors with the cylinder contours. Thanks!
I'd say your contours are pretty good overall.
What I'd do is push the foreshortening more, especially on the top loop there would be a pretty hard kink in the cylinder. I tried to make it flow more evenly and pushed it a bit further away from the viewer, looks more like a fluid motion to me.
The other thing I noticed is that it didn't look like you drew your ellipses all the way through. A lot of them look like they should be more rounded on the borders of the tube.
And one last minor thing. Make sure the left "railing" of the bridge is the same height (or even smaller, considering there would need to be space for the floor) as the right side.
Aaaand another thing that came to mind while writing: Probably could have pushed the sitze of the tail at the bottom due to perspective (Circles in blue).
Keep it up, I love you work =).
Thank you so much Sascharunge! This is so helpful! I fought with this snake all yesterday and my mind was warped! Thank you so much for pointing out everything else as well! This all makes sense and are great ideas! I can't wait to make these changes. Thank you for pointing out the railing issue as well! I appreciate you and that you took the time!
This looks like a great exercise Lockenheim!
The snake/dragon is very well done ^^
You could have pushed the contour lines more, It looks like it could be a lot more rounder in some spots especially directly behind the snakes head.
Since you have a 3 point perspective and the third point is above the horizon line everything below the horizon would be really foreshortened:
- As sascharunge said, the end of the snakes "tail" should also be a lot bigger.
- You can see an example of this when you look at the pillar you drew where the tail wraps around, it's bigger at the bottom and gets smaller duo perspective, you can use that as a reference to how the tail should look like.
- If the 3rd perspective point would be below the horizon the complete opposite would be true and the top part would be bigger
If you want to emphasize the scale of the creature (even more than you already have).
Try to have a good size relationship like putting something everybody knows the size of behind the creature.
You could put a castle structure in the background which has doors and windows, those would obviously be human sized and that would make the creature look a lot more bigger.
Since you already have a human in front this isn't really necessary, just an Idee to make it pop even more ;D
All in all this is really good! I see nothing really image breaking in the drawing, perspective looks correct (outside of the things pointed out).
I would love to see it shaded, since the tail is a huge cylinder this would make great practice with some cool light setup!
Thanks so much for the feedback Luke, this is very helpful! I definitely have plans to put a castle or tower in this piece =) This is my first attempt at a full picture with a character in perspective so it has been quite a challenge. All the feedback has certainly helped me out quite a bit! I will continue working on this piece this week and hopefully have something ready to show before I submit for the art stream this weekend. Ill keep you posted! I am very unfamiliar with using values as I have only attempted several times but I plan on trying. I have had some excellent help that has given me some great guidance in that regard. Thank you so much for your advice I agree with all of it and I will post an update after I have fixed / pushed it! Thanks!
You got this man! ;D
Values get so much more easier with experience and practice. You can really feel it get better each and every time.
If you wanna give yourself a challenge, throw in some color / color theory too and it gets even more complex.
Thats why studying values seperate is so much more effective. Start with easy forms like spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones and out of that you can pretty much simplify every object in existence and shade it like you would shade those simple forms.
Your drawing is a really really good foundation where you can pretty much see every form and go from there.
Quick tip: When you get lost in your drawing, try to throw in some flat colors at spots where there is a lot going on.
A lot of the foundation you already drew than gets set in stone and the cluttering gets buried underneath.
It's also a really good tool if you can't quite imagine your drawing in 3D (basically it doesn't look like it has any depth). Throwing in some really basic shading can get your brain in that 3D mindset.
Take it with a grain of salt, other than that I hope it helps at least a bit, everything depends on the person and their experience ;D
Alrighty here is the progress I have made on this this week. Thank you so much everyone for the awesome ideas. I have implemented all of them! Oh except any shading, not quite there yet. I still have lots to do on this, but working on an entry gate to the tower is probably next and snake projectile spit! A lot of this assignment is fairly new to me so it does take me quite some time! Any feedback is always welcome! Thanks so much to everyone for all the help so far! Snake hunter and her companions vs tower of 1000 eyes
Nice progress!
Amoresea has a really important point.
Right when the tail wraps around the column (or tucks behind it), it should be rounder, to emphasize its volume, right now it kinda looks flat and compressed, almost squished.
You would definitely notice it while shading, but right now it could be overlooked, so keep it in mind ^^.
I like the eye tower idea. Gives it some really creepy but interesting vibes.
The depth is also really good. More detail at the foreground and way less at the back, nice job!
