  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations.To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color.The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character.My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell.You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs.This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Hi everyone! I'm Chloe and new to this forum :). I have seen so many great artists giving useful feedback here, so I want to give this site a shot.


This is one of my most recent drawings. I have always had a lot of problems in finishing since I tend to get overwhelmed by what I have to do. Hence the mess you see. Any help and critique are appreciated. Thank you :smiley:!

Hello Chloe! Welcome to the forums :smile:

So I really don't see why you think this is a mess. I think it looks really nice. I like the lighting and the vibe you've managed to convey. I also enjoy the story telling aspect. It looks like a first contact between human and this alien race, with the guy being thrilled and the alien being a bit put off (maybe she finds him a bit too brash or something). All I can see are probably just minor adjustments.

I wrote down some of the adjustments I would personnally do on the picture. I don't know if you'll be able to read my handwriting, but I also did a quick paintover and wrote down some extra explanation, so that might help you to understand better :sweat_smile:

So I lowered the peak of the alien left breast as it seemed a bit too high compared to her right one. I also added folds one her dress thing, under the arm, to help give the impression she's pushing her arm againt her stomach. I also felt like her upper arm was getting too thin towards the shoulder, so I added skin bulging out of the bracelet she has to make it seem like it was really tight (I'm not sure if this is what you were going for)

As for the guy, I felt like the line of his back on the right was't quite right, so I tried to correct it. Although I'll say I'm not sure sure if it was wrong in the first place, so feel free to ignore. Lastly I added his other hand over both characters hand. I know that some people do that when giving handshakes and I felt like it fitted with his apparent excitement. It also helps to make it feel like he's not just a armed guy XD.

One last thing that I'd like to suggest is maybe adding a background, even if it's just a suggestion of one. It would just help to give a little bit of extra narrative to the scene.

But other than that, I like it very much. Really nice work! :smile:

So I have always had this problem as well.

But really after lots of drawing and lots of painting you realise that its just time, and marks, curved or straight, and edges soft or hard, and contrast.

But there are a few things you can go by for yourself for now if a piece is finished or not.


ONE: Ask yourself questions like your audience, or art director.

The alien is humanoid enough for me to understand her emotions. But I have questions. And you don't want me, the viewer, to have any questions at all. You have to sell sell sell me the story. "What is that....blood coming off the hands?", "Is she mad or stoic or just annoyed...she looks annoyed?", "Is it the blood on the hands making her annoyed or how goofy the guy is?", "Is her head dress floating in the back or is the artist finished?", "Is that guy homeless or just happy to see someone after a long space flight?"

That being said my advice is to think like the viewer and ask yourself these questions and answer them by doing the painting or drawing.


TWO: Face and hands, face and hands, face and hands, face and hands, face hands facnedshandandsfands face hacefancds face and hands. You get it.

After shape language and composition we identify the human emotions by these two anatomy parts the most. Nail them down every time. @cedricgo is right about the hands. Sell sell sell me that this guy is overly excited. Don't know what to do next in your piece? Well just go ahead and knock these two parts off the list while you come up with some questions. They take the longest every time for me because of so much identifying information.

-- Here's a scenario that's never happened that illustrates my frustration with hand painting. -
Final is presented.
Art director: "Could you maybe move his hand onto his waist? "
Me: Breaks stylus. :rage: "Welcome to my *day rate."
Art Director: "Nevermind its fine."


Three: Take a breath. And a break and come back and just realize that all you have now are edges. Because at this stage of your paitning all of your hard thinking is out of the way here. At this stage in your painting you should be done with Color/light block in, pose, design, and composition. And the process that I enjoy the most, painting and rendering, can now begin at this point while I listen to a book or podcast or watch a streamer and just spend time rendering. Edges of contour, light, and surface texture. Hard vs. Softer.

And that's really it. If I did a paintover it would just be the finishing stage of rendering form better but I'll leave that to you.


Four: Will it look good if I print this?
I like to print my stuff and it never looks the same in rgb on screen as it does on paper and I adjust my painting process to do so. I would need to see more of your stuff to tell for sure but I can tell that your screen is bright and the purple part of her arm in shadow (on the left) is not going to print well and is way darker than the other arm which also has shadow.

Keep all your values blocked in the same range for easy read and identification.
