I came up with the story of Sandaara ( A name in my native nation that literally means Dawn) . I wanted to depict a heroic moment of saving her father from within the circle of witches . She is a master of energy manipulation and healing techniques that comes from a bloodline of mages in Esagil kingdom. So shes able to land and grab her father before he is consumed by wicked creatures.

So I dont usually start with a design per se If I have a vivid image of final composition for an image. I usually can come to base color stage where I can see how characters interact with each other and see what they actually will need from designing standpoint. Function determines design. Also I like the simplicity in terms of character design so its not a big deal for me to do it later on in the process of creating an illustration.
I start with super 1 minute roughs that look like insane's scibbles but they give me a fst emotional feedback. Emotion first.

Then I create a more in depth version of sketch which looks a bit more proper . Placing mannequins.

Drawing first basic design. As I said, I love simplicity , so I don't really worry about the fact that it might change later on, even composition is not set in stone. Its just for me, to get general feeling of the characters, their roles and interactions. I suffer a lot from this approach, but for personal pieces it is, for now at least, is how I roll. Iterations only make it better.

Then I lay down basic colors. Was not sure if I should place them in the ruins or the old forest. Rolled with the forest for now. Will see if it works or not.

BTW , I have questions regarding guidelines. First, I streamed the whole process up to this momet on Twitch. Is it allowed or not? Second. Am I fitting in terms of canvas and character full body depiction rules? I read it has to be like 80 percent

If I'm correct @coldburger streamed his own process for ART WAR 1 (and certainly others too since then), and it was not a problem I think ?
And for the 80% percent it should be alright too.
If you really think that could be a problem...maybe try to put your hero a little more in front, or his father less on him, or flip him on other side... ? (but I guess that will break your (great) composition ?).

But honestly it looks good.
Good luck !

Looks great already! Can't wait to see more

So I havent mad an update in while and my friends are bugging me about it &] Hence I'm making small base color update on concept sheet. Its lose and all, but I like getting a color right as soon as I can. I'm still not very good at steady paced and well thought out way of work, gotta get slower.

Nice work! I like the colors you choose!
If you're having trouble to find a steady pace, make a plan, put your workflow on paper, go step by step, think this thought, once all of this is done it's just do the plan, and it should flow naturally after. Because once it's clear in your head the biggest part is already done!
Also I recommend to listen to this while working, it helped me a lot, they're awesome

looks awesome! I love the colors

looking great, but I'd avoid that strong vertical tree in the background, it feels like it breaks the image into two, and clashes with the gorgeous diagonals of her wings

Good point by @tck. It's also right in the middle of that negative space so it is throwing off the balance in that way as well.

It looks amazing! I hope you'll finish in time too!
