- Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?in23.9k
- Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with youin1.4k

- Thank you @daceronine! If I remember I save in google cloud, I will have to stick a note to do it more often. Lamp is from life. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!in46.8k

WIP 5
I couldn't spend too much time on this since last WIP and now I have to completely abandon the Challenge for two weeks - I'm taking a vacation and I will have no access to computer. But when I come back there will be still month till deadline so I should be OK.
This is where I'm now:

Those pencil sketches look absolutely amazing, you've really conveyed a great scale with them. I think that may have gotten a little bit lost in the WIPs, the size of city within crater really made the planet feel massive. Also, the debris in the sky - the planet rings or floating ice / rocks really have a great read on the 4th WIP, but have started to blend a bit in the 6th one. Maybe deciding on keeping them as a contrasting value - dark on light, might make them a bit more legible and recognizable as a cohesive shape.
Awesome work so far man, keep it up
Thank you @volenck ! I'm glad you like my sketches and I agree that later WIPs lost a bit of initial feel/vision. I hope I will be able to bring it back in the end. Currently I'm more focused on details (I can work on it about 1 hour per day), but I keep everything in manageable state so I think I'll be able to adjust/enhance things like colors, brightness and contrast, aerial perspective etc. later, so I hope my final image won't be too much disappointing. Thank you once again for the kind words and ideas for improvement . I will definitely keep them in mind.

WIP 7
I haven't posted anything for a while so I thought it wouldn't be bad to show where I'm now currently, and it goes like this:
There was no clear breakthrough in the matter because I don't have too much time for this (usually about 1 - 1.5 hour per day plus some extra hours on weekends) so I simply turn on all stubbornness I have and just keep working and pushing it forward step by step and bite by bite - until the deadline finally catches me. Speaking of deadline... it seems (surprisingly ) approaching, so I'll have to make time and push it to the limit. Well... at least my limit.
Regards
Jonatan
P.S. As for "stubbornness" and "keep working" - Iv'e discovered here on Cubebrush great motivational video by Clint Cearley:
https://cubebrush.co/clintcearley/products/mj4iq/the-attribute-motivational-video
I think we all have worse days when our weaknesses and doubts are overwhelming. When I have one of these days I watch this video and I'm back on track again - I've found it very powerful. So if you have some dark hours and thinking about quitting... don't do it - keep fighting!
Your work is going pretty well and progress is apparent! I definitely like the idea, very interesting! When you are pressed with time try to focus on key areas of the image so that you can show it anytime the deadline comes. I really like the lighting and fresh snowy feeling. At the moment I feel the image needs more distinct atmospheric perspective and more dramatic difference between fore/background. I think it is ok to sacrifice some details on the background for the sake of overall impression. Good job has already been done to make the image more vivid and painted but there are still many parts that looks "3d modeled", like big planet on the background and houses of the cities and those frozen in ice. Looking forward to see further progress!
Thank you very much @korontari for kind words and constructive critique - all solid points and I will keep them in mind. Currently I'm working mostly on the planets, Moon and rings / meteors. Soon I will focus on the cities, cargo bay, roads and remainings of the old world to deal with this 3D look which you pointed and to introduce atmospheric perspective to the image. As for "overall impression" - I saw your work and... yeah, you clearly know what you talking about!
Thank you once again.

Hey @jonatan-moonchild! I also this is one of the strongest piece I've seen so far. I really like the feeling of the snow and the lighting as well. I really like the idea how you made tunnels the side of the craters to get that road across it's such a nice idea.
I'm not so sure maybe I'm missing a point about those buildings outside of the craters. The bunch of the left slightly feel disconnected from the city itself. Are they some sort of abandoned buildings or ruins?
Also I do agree with Korontari, a bit of atmospheric perspective would help a lot. ^^
Also maybe it's just me but I feel those fields of snow outside of the craters bit too flat, like it would have been made out of concrete. Maybe that would help to sell the immersion a lot if you add a bit of snow dunes onto it, so it would blend more in the area around the crater as well and maybe that would also solve the problem what I've mentioned about the buildings on the left side.
To summarize it, I think you made a freaking good work so far with the illustration, everything looks so well made so far apart from those minor issues that I've mentioned. The shape language is pretty good, the lighting is superb! The colors, feeling of the piece and the composition looks awesome too! Keep at it!
Really nice work, as others have said, great composition and lighting. My main problem with your piece is, it still has a very 3D feel to it (in my opinion anyway). I'm not sure if you plan to make it more painterly in some way or not. For example, the buildings or the trees inside the craters are all pretty much the same and feel very 3D-ish if you know what I mean. The snow used to be like that as well, but it's better now I think.
Other than that, I really like your piece, I think it's one of the better ones and I can't wait to see it finished! Good luck mate!
P.S. Boy, oh boy do I struggle with those dark moments you speak of... There's times I hate my pieces so much I just want to delete them all >.< Thankdully, I have learnt the hard way now that all you can ever do is keep pushing forward... Hang in there bro!
Thank you very much @flamer and @thakis for the kind words and for your feedback! Yes you are right - there is still many pieces that I didn't touch too much after rendering them in Blender. To be honest I'd like to do a bit more in 3D - I always thought that split between 2D and 3D is a little bit artificial because 2D softwares and 3D softwares are just a tools and we should always use all the tools available to get the best results. But the rules are the rules and I definitely respect them. Especially that they allow us to use 3D renders as a base for painting, so they are not so much restrictive anyway. I will alter the buildings, trees and so on as much as I can in 2D. As for the buildings outside the craters - the idea is that they are remainings of the old world flooded and frozen as a result of the cataclysm. I agree that plane around the craters is now just a flat plane out of the render. I've made an indication that there is actually water underneath the ice near the tanker. Expanding that indication is on my (long) to do list.
Well... less than a week left, so... I'll better get back to work. Thank you once again. You give me extra motivation to bring this to the "final" stage - despite the fact that there's no such thing as "finished art"
Regards
Jonatan
I guess splitting 2D and 3D like that is an easy way to critique the works. I mean, you can easily pick a 2D piece as having a more painterly look or a distinctly appealing style. In 3D, I think there's less room to do that, so I guess they want to avoid putting overly realistic 3D spaces in the same place as painted or stylized ones, which seems totally logical to me. Plus, more prizes for more people, which is great
As far as the old world leftovers are concerned, I think you should add some visible cues that they are old/abandoned, or at least some snow piling on top of them, to differentiate them from the new ones.
Having so few hours per day to work on it sucks, I can totally relate to that Keep at it and good luck!
This is my final image:
and my Concept Sheet:
Thank you Cubebrush team for this great Challenge, judges for your time and effort and sponsors for the prizes. Big thanks to all competitors! Your feedback helped me alot and watching your progresses was a big motivation for me. Overall it was quite a journey and I must admit that there was a few moments when I was thinking about quitting... I'm so glad that I didn't! Good luck to all of you :).
Best regards

Very well done piece @jonatan-moonchild! It turned out as a really well detailed and well constructed piece! I also like the process of it! Well done! ^^
Thank you very much @flamer and @korontari! Your words are a great reward for all hard work :).
