  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

I realized I've been doing assignments and not posting them... here are the ones I've finished so far!

The circles were probably the hardest part for me. This assignment made me notice there is a slight offset between were my pen tip touches my tablet screen and where the line actually appears. Is that normal? I'm using a Wacom One.

I realized about halfway through the liquify assignment that you could change the size of the liquify brush just like a paint brush lol.

I had fun with this one

Nice work with these assignments! I really like your photo castle bash! Keep it up!

I've been doing the perspective exercises. I decided to draw some cubes freehand to get more pen control practice.

I was wondering how you might draw things in perspective at different angles. This is my first try. I did it by shifting the vanishing points along the horizon, while keeping them the same distance apart, to avoid distortion. I'm not 100% sure about how it turned out. Has anyone else tried this? Feedback is welcome! (hopefully the sketchy lines don't make it too hard to see what I was trying to do)

When rotating an object the vanishing points would indeed move accordingly, but the space between them would shrink or grow, depending on how you rotate it. The space between a set of vanishing points is smallest, when the object you are rotating is facing you at a 45° angle.

This becomes clear when you are trying to imagine an object in one point perspective, so an object at a 90° angle. One vanishing point is directly in front of you and the other infinitely far of to the side.

Keeping this in mind you'll want to move the vanishing points further apart, the more it is rotated from a 45° angle. If you don't want to guess, here's how to get it accurately:

You'll have to chose a station point which I marked as SP. Usually, the horizontal position of the SP aligns with the centre of the image plan, but I chose to align it with the frontal edge of your black cube in this example. Then, you'll move it down to the point, where the lines between the vanishing points and the station point would describe a 90° angle (green in the picture). From there on rotating the vanishing points is as simple as drawing a new set of two lines connected to the station point that are still at an angle of 90° (here in turquoise). The new vanishing points are where these lines cross the hoirzon line.

I you now wanted to know the accurate lengths of the edges of the object you'd need to have a perfect circle in perspective as a point of reference (which is basically any ellipse with the minor axis perpendicular to the horizon line that is sitting on the ground plane. Just make sure there aren't multiple different ones). I recommend just eyeballing the length of the sides.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! A very interesting method and I can't wait to try it. I'll post what I draw as soon as I do!

oh you have started around the same time as me! Oh I quite like the detail of the face of your OC but you also have the same problem with me with feet! I also struggle with feet alot. Looking forward to see how much we progress on our journey

Feet and hands are the hardest things to draw out of everything I think! I'm just beginning to get comfortable with faces but hands and feet still mess me all up.

Also not my OC, its Sugi from Clone Wars, I should edit my post to make sure it's not like I'm trying to take credit

Anyway, here is my first try at using @Xybb method. I was a bit tired so my lines are extra sketchy. but I think there are other problems... the red rectangle looks distorted. Could it be because my station line is not exactly centered? I will probably try some more times.

The problem is less about the station point not being centered but more about it being to close the image plane, which means your vanishing points are very close together. The station point is representing the viewer. So, what happens when the viewer/camera is very close to the object? The object appears very large and if you wanted to capture it in a single frame you'd have to use a fisheye lense, which are known for their cool distortion effects.

This video by Dan Beardshaw explains the topic really well.

Using this technique you'll likely see that the red rectangle is partly outside of the cone of vision, so distortion is to be expected

Also, it's generally a good idea to keep the station point centered. Usually it would only be off center if you took a photo and cropped it on one side. I was just being lazy in my example in my previous post, sorry =).

Great work! Your dream castle is awesome!

I know you posted this a while ago but do you remember how you adjusted the color of the beach image? It looks spot on!

I don't quite remember the order but I do know I used multiple rounds of adjustments. (for example start with color balance, then use hue/saturation, then levels/curves, then go back to color balance or hue/saturation as needed, repeat am many times as needed)

I still didn't quite get the blue of the ocean right, I was tempted to use a selection to adjust it on it's own but I don't think that's supposed to be part of that assignment.

Hope it helps! I'm still learning Photoshop myself.

No problem, that video was super helpful! I'm really enjoying getting this deeper understanding of perspective drawing. Here was my next try after the video:

I think I finally feel ready to start the 1 and 2 point room and street corner assignments now. (In other words, I'm not sure drawing cubes will be able to keep my attention much longer!)

8 days later

I've been working on my one point perspective... I'm still having issues with some parts but I'm a lot happier with it than when I first started laying it out.

Not my actual room...

Wow you work looks really good !

Progress!

I thought I'd make the cannons all a little different to make it feel a bit more lifelike, but I feel like there might be more wonkyness going on than can be explained by that... any feedback is always appreciated!

19 days later

I finally finished my 1-point perspective... I ended up spending way more time on it that I meant to. I was having too much fun adding all the details to this. I will try not to make my 2-point so complicated because now I'm getting impatient to move on to the figure drawings!

Love this 🤩 So much detail, there is even a second tiny little ship 😆

13 days later

Well I lied a little bit, I ended up making my 2-point pretty detailed as well, and I did a small extracurricular concept exercise for it too... I think with these I may have been doing some subconscious procrastinating, technical things have always been my artistic comfort zone and I've always had some fear of drawing people, but it looks like there's finally nothing left for me to do but start the figure drawing!

Great work so far and I definitely understand that sentiment about technical things versus drawing people. I think it's because technical things tend to be uniformed and easy with straight or simple lines. On the other hand, people are far from uniformed and that can be nerve racking at the start!

Thanks and that's definitely true. Also it seems like to me there are almost intangible qualities that make good drawings of people/characters feel alive... so far so many of my attempts have just felt wooden and I just have so much trouble getting that alive feel... this is something I'm hoping to learn!

9 days later

Thanks @marco_cprn97 !

I'm just getting started with the figure drawing but I figured I'd post what I have so far to see if there are any glaring problems before I keep going. I realized I probably drew too many things over my first round, it turned out a bit messy. I also realized the references I picked may be making it harder... it seems like these exercises are easier to do when the limbs don't overlap:

Yes it' simpler to draw figures without overlapping limbs, maybe it's better to start with simpler poses and then move to complicated ones. You still did a pretty good job! Your analysis of the limbs with the use of cylinders is on point too and they're in the right perspetctive. I think it's a pretty good job overall.

Here's my initial proportions and gesture stuff... well sort of initial, my very first 30 sec gestures were so messy most of them just looked like random scribbles >.< I think I started getting the hang of it after a few pages. working with a 30 second timer was harder than I expected though!

For the start these gestures already look nice and clean. You only used few lines which is also very good 👍
If you feel a bit to overwhelmed tho, just try some 60 sec gestures. Will make it a bit easier ^.^
