- Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?in24.6k
- Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with youin1.5k

- Thank you @daceronine! If I remember I save in google cloud, I will have to stick a note to do it more often. Lamp is from life. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!in49.4k
8 days later
I'm sick. Got the flu or something. Doctor's appointment in a few days. I never get sick so it's extra hard for me
I can only keep up for 8-9 hours a day right now and I've got a 40 page paper and a large project that needs to be finished in about 1 month.
I'm currently spending 15-20 min a day drawing. I'm just doing exercises in order to not lose/forget stuff. I've also started studying the skull a few min every day in order to grasp what's actually going on underneath. It's helped me realize a few things like neck muscle attachment, jaw attachment aaaand skull shape. The amount of variation in size and shape across genders and the human race as a whole is pretty interesting.
oh no ;( being ill sux!
I really hope you get well soon!!
Im amazed how determined you are with your practices! There is also fun fact that i've learnt about human skulls. You know how some people have weaker jaws and worse teeth and some people have strogner jaw shapes and better teeth? All that due to the tongue placement! like where and how it rests in the mouth. Also it is affect by what type of food person eats. ( but idk this one for sure)
Thanks!
I strive to always do something, even if I'm sick or have too much to do. It really doesn't matter if it's only a few minutes a day as long as I do something.
That's pretty interesting, I think I've heard of the tongue placement somewhere before but never heard about food affecting jaw shapes. That dietary choices affect teeth and enamel makes sense with sugary and acidic foods etc.
We're strange things
Just some dailies waiting to get healthy again.
I'm beginning to learn to make conscious decisions when I draw and not just following a set of rules and let things happen on their own.
I'm taking the step from drawing unisex heads to male/female heads - even though some traits are predominantly male or female a lot of traits overlap for the average head.
Every time I'm done with something in PS it looks okay. 2 min later when I'm going to upload things I spot all kinds of errors
Like:
- the ears not being the same size (I swear I measured them twice)
- one ear is thinner than the other
- the guy's trapz are different sizes
- top of his skull is deformed
Poor guy
- I can't really put a finger on what the problem is for the female head but something feels off
- I think left side of the jaw is a bit off in terms of angle and size compared to the right side
- Her neck might also be on the thicker side.
- Her ears are vastly different. They cannot be from the same person.
I guess I should be happy I can spot them at all. I wonder if I should add like a short "fix your image" block to my dailies, where I take a previous image, spot the errors and correct them.
Tried improving above guy ^ today after I did my dailies.
Just realized I misplaced one ear slightly... MOTHER****
I tried giving the poor guy some upgrades:
- Mended his broken skull
- Pulled back his ears and performed some plastic surgery on the ears
- corrected his temporal lines (or was it bones?) with a hammer
- glued on eyebrows for basic expressions
- gave him a mouth worthy of bullying.
- added a clown nose.
I've not reached the mouth tutorial yet so I kinda guessed. Maybe it's a bit too narrow. Too scared to draw the nose, been too long since I drawed one. Need to go back to noses tomorrow. Replaced empty space with a clown nose.
I really like how you criticise yourself! i do that too.. and i also spot so many mistakes that i did right before uploading sumth somewhere (it's painful) haha ;D
Idk if this will be helpful or not but I watched serie these videos and it helped me understand where to place ears and how thin or thick cheeckbones can be etc. Basically it helped me to analyze things that i see easier.
what the heck. I completely missed the more in-depth proko videos about the loomis technique. I just watched his older one which didn't really help much back when I just started out. I'm checking it out right now before I'm going to do my dailies. Thanks for the link!
The cheekbones are my next obstacle to tackle when drawing the ears. I need to be more mindful of how much they may or may not cover the ears in a front view!
So maybe something like this instead??
So when I only deal with lines and no shading maybe I'll just draw the whole ear, then just erase the sections which would be hidden. This seems to be the simplest way.
When I'm looking at the image I think I've either misplaced the ears (I put them down the middle so I don't think I misplaced them) or the ovals were screwed from the start. Too wide or maybe the shaving was bad. But maybe not. Argh. WHATEVER :>
I think you place the ears at the right spot!
I mean they can be higher or lower depending on how big is the facial proportions of the person
But i took a look at it and there are few things that i think could help you out.
1st one is to sligthly darken the area where the ear and the cheeck meet.
because head is round and when you look straight at the face this width of the face that we can clearly see from the side will be represented by a tiny bit of shadow (check out some photos of ppl in black and white and i think that u will spot this)
2nd one i did a little paintover.
basically from the angle when the ear is not sticking out so much the antihelix and tragus will stick out more than the helix.
and yes cheeckbone can cover some part of the ear but i think usually u will still see helix or antihelix depending on how much ear stick out in general
hope it helps
and im glad to see that you are back in business haha
argh, I recognize some things you've mentioned but I guess I forgot/didn't pay attention to during the drawing. I think I need like a reference app or something where I can look at stuff from any angle and be reminded of things/finding new details. I'm usually very very bad at looking up references so unless I've copypasted images straight into the file I'm working on I'm just drawing from memory of what marc and other people have said and it's so easy to forget when learning new stuff constantly.
I might have to take a step back and work on things more before I consider them "finished" and move on to the next thing. While I definitely feel like I'm improving I also feel like I'm missing stuff I should know by now.
it's completely fine to forget something, you will get used to all these details when you practice more!
it is a question of habit.
there is an assignment in first terms about spending five minutes a day to just looking at an object and observing its materials and the nuances. And tbh it is a good exercise.
25 days later
I'm alive I've barely have had time to even open photoshop the last month due to last push at university and a thousand courses that needed to be dealt with but I've still drawn a few lines here and there, maybe an average of 10 min a day or something.
Here's my first head.
As always, shading = ass. I guess more contrasting values and less subtle ones?
I saved the image as a new file every once in a while just so I can see that I'm steadily improving the image to keep myself motivated rather than just have the latest image as a reference and be constantly disappointed by it :>
Here's a GIF.
I should probably have stopped earlier and I'm not sure if I overdid something. It was easy spotting mistakes in the beginning but the longer I worked on it the more difficult it became.
I'm at a place where I'm not sure where and what to improve. It obviously does not look great. I can say that much but I can't put my finger on what and where/how/why.
I guess I'm too inexperienced and need to level up a bit :> So I'll just drop it for now and start working on a new one while booting up term 3.
Should probably have watched the last segment in anatomy 2. I think I'll go and do that and see how many errors I've made and could've easily avoided if I just watched the damn video :>
aaaand I just realized the ears look off
